Hiring an apprentice this Apprenticeship Week?

Is it time to consider hiring an apprentice, someone you can train to work your way?

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations says:
Benefits of hiring an apprentice
– Gain an enthusiastic and ready-to-learn new starter on your team
– Train them to meet your business’s current and future needs
– Give back to the community and pass on your valuable experience
– You may also be eligible for financial incentives when you hire apprentices

What are my responsibilities?
– Provide full-time or part-time work
– Pay the apprentice the correct wage, superannuation, leave and entitlements
– Provide the apprentice time to attend training
– Pay for training costs if required
– Supervise the apprentice according to your State Training Authority’s rules
– Abide by National Employment Standards
– Induct the apprentice into your company and provide work health and safety instructions
– Train the apprentice in line with their training plan
– Sign off log books at regular intervals

Financial support for employers
The Priority Hiring Incentive is a wage subsidy for employers of Australian Apprentices training towards an occupation listed on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List at a Certificate level III or above.

You may be eligible to receive up to $5000 in the first year of an apprenticeship, ($2,500 for a part -time apprentice).

Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support (DAAWS)
DAAWS is a weekly payment to employers who employ apprentices with disability.
You can receive $104.30 each week for:
– 12 months if the individual has a long term or permanent disability
– The length of the temporary disability
